How to help your child with fractions

Fractions don't have to be frustrating.

This guide gives you practical strategies, word-for-word scripts, and the key misconceptions to watch for — so you can actually help instead of both getting frustrated.

Why fractions are so hard

Fractions break the rules kids have learned about numbers. Understanding why helps you be patient:

Bigger digits = bigger numbers

1/8 is smaller than 1/4, even though 8 > 4

Multiplication makes bigger

6 × 1/2 = 3, which is smaller than 6

One number, one symbol

Fractions are ONE number written as two

Add the parts separately

Can't add 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5 (need common denominators)

What to say (and what to avoid)

Avoid

"Just find the common denominator"

Try instead

"We need pieces that are the same size before we can count them together. Let's draw it."

Procedures without understanding don't stick.

Avoid

"That's wrong. The answer is..."

Try instead

"Interesting — can you show me how you got that? Let's check if it makes sense."

Understanding their thinking reveals the misconception.

Avoid

"Fractions are easy, you just..."

Try instead

"Fractions are tricky at first because they work differently than regular numbers."

Validates their struggle while normalizing it.

"Remember the rule: invert and multiply"

Try instead

"When we divide by 1/2, we're asking: how many halves fit into this? Let's see."

Rules without meaning are forgotten. Meaning lasts.

Practical strategies that work

Use food (seriously)

Pizza, brownies, cookies — anything that can be cut into parts. Physical manipulation builds intuition that worksheets can't.

"If we cut this brownie into 4 equal pieces and you eat 1, what fraction did you eat?"

Draw, draw, draw

Fraction bars, circles, number lines. Visual models make the abstract concrete. Don't skip this step.

Draw two identical rectangles. Shade 1/2 of one and 1/3 of the other. "Which shaded part is bigger?"

Estimate before calculating

Before solving 1/2 + 1/3, ask: "Will the answer be more or less than 1?" This catches errors AND builds number sense.

"1/2 is half a pizza. 1/3 is a third. Together, is that more or less than a whole pizza?"

Connect to money

Kids understand quarters and dimes. Use that! 1/4 = 25 cents, 1/2 = 50 cents.

"If 1/4 of a dollar is 25 cents, what's 3/4 of a dollar?"

Ask "does that make sense?"

After every answer, pause. If 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5, ask: "Is 2/5 more or less than 1/2? Does that make sense?"

"You said 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5. But 2/5 is less than 1/2. How can adding something make it smaller?"

Misconceptions to watch for

These aren't random mistakes — they're logical conclusions from incomplete understanding:

The emotional side

Frustration is normal. Fractions genuinely break intuition. Acknowledge it.

Praise effort, not speed. "I like how you drew that out to check" beats "You got it so fast!"

Short sessions beat marathons. 10 focused minutes daily beats 1 hour of frustration weekly.

It's okay to say "I don't know." Model learning together. "Let's figure this out."
