Grade 5Math skills checklist

What should a 5th grader know in math?

The complete grade 5 math skills checklist

Fifth grade is a pivotal year. Students solidify fraction operations, connect fractions to decimals, and build the foundation for middle school math. Here's what mastery looks like.

Fractions & Decimals

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators

Find common denominators and perform operations fluently.

Examples: 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6, 3/4 - 1/6 = 7/12
Common misconception

Multiply fractions and whole numbers

Understand multiplication as scaling and compute products.

Examples: 3 × 2/5 = 6/5, 1/4 × 1/2 = 1/8
Common misconception

Divide fractions in simple cases

Divide unit fractions by whole numbers and vice versa.

Examples: 1/2 ÷ 3 = 1/6, 4 ÷ 1/2 = 8

Connect fractions and decimals

Convert between fraction and decimal forms fluently.

Examples: 1/4 = 0.25, 0.6 = 3/5
Common misconception

Compare decimals to thousandths

Order and compare decimals using place value understanding.

Examples: 0.45 < 0.5, 0.125 < 0.13

Operations & Algebraic Thinking

Write and interpret numerical expressions

Use parentheses, brackets, and braces in expressions.

Examples: 2 × (3 + 4), (6 + 2) ÷ 4

Analyze patterns and relationships

Generate two numerical patterns and identify relationships.

Examples: If x follows rule "+3" and y follows rule "+6", y is always twice x

Measurement & Geometry

Calculate volume of rectangular prisms

Find volume by counting unit cubes or using V = l × w × h.

Examples: A box 3 × 4 × 2 has volume 24 cubic units

Understand coordinate plane basics

Plot points in the first quadrant using ordered pairs.

Examples: Plot (3, 5), Point A is at (2, 4)

Convert measurement units

Convert within systems using multiplication and division.

Examples: 5 feet = 60 inches, 3 liters = 3000 mL

Place Value & Number Sense

Understand place value to billions

Read, write, and compare large numbers using place value.

Examples: 3,456,789,000, Three billion, four hundred...

Multiply multi-digit whole numbers

Use standard algorithm for multi-digit multiplication.

Examples: 234 × 56 = 13,104

Divide with 2-digit divisors

Divide using strategies based on place value.

Examples: 1,260 ÷ 42 = 30

Where grade 5 students often struggle

  • Adding fractions by adding both numerators AND denominators (1/2 + 1/3 ≠ 2/5)
  • Thinking multiplication always makes numbers bigger (3 × 1/2 = 1.5, which is smaller than 3)
  • Comparing decimals by ignoring place value (thinking 0.45 > 0.5)
  • Confusing area and perimeter, or area and volume
  • Forgetting to find common denominators before adding fractions

Signs your child is on track

  • Can explain WHY they find common denominators (not just how)
  • Estimates fraction sums before calculating (1/2 + 1/3 is close to 1)
  • Connects fractions to real-world contexts naturally
  • Self-corrects by checking if answers make sense
  • Can convert between fractions and decimals without a chart

Coming in grade 6

Mastering these grade 5 skills prepares your child for:

Dividing fractions by fractions
Ratios and proportional relationships
Negative numbers and the number line
Algebraic expressions with variables
Statistical measures (mean, median, mode)
Geometry: area of triangles, polygons
