Grade 3Math skills checklist

What should a 3rd grader know in math?

The complete grade 3 math skills checklist

Third grade marks a major shift. Students master multiplication facts, encounter fractions for the first time, and develop fluency with larger numbers. Strong foundations here are essential for what comes next.

Multiplication & Division

Understand multiplication as groups

See 3 × 4 as "3 groups of 4" or "4 groups of 3."

Examples: 3 × 4 = 12, 5 groups of 2 = 10

Know multiplication facts to 10 × 10

Fluently recall products from memory (building toward automaticity).

Examples: 7 × 8 = 56, 6 × 9 = 54

Understand division as sharing or grouping

See 12 ÷ 3 as "12 shared among 3" or "how many 3s in 12."

Examples: 12 ÷ 4 = 3, 20 ÷ 5 = 4

Connect multiplication and division

Use fact families and understand inverse relationship.

Examples: If 6 × 7 = 42, then 42 ÷ 7 = 6

Fractions Introduction

Understand fractions as equal parts

Recognize that fractions require equal-sized pieces.

Examples: 1/4 means 1 of 4 equal parts, Shade 2/3 of a shape
Common misconception

Represent fractions on a number line

Locate fractions between 0 and 1 (and beyond).

Examples: Place 1/2 on a number line, Find 3/4 between 0 and 1

Compare fractions with same numerator or denominator

Use reasoning to compare simple fractions.

Examples: 1/2 > 1/4 (same numerator), 3/4 > 2/4 (same denominator)

Recognize equivalent fractions

Understand that different fractions can name the same amount.

Examples: 1/2 = 2/4, 2/3 = 4/6

Place Value & Operations

Understand place value to thousands

Read, write, and compare numbers to 1,000.

Examples: 452 = 400 + 50 + 2, Compare 782 and 728

Add and subtract within 1,000

Use strategies and algorithms for multi-digit operations.

Examples: 456 + 278, 803 - 457

Round to nearest 10 or 100

Estimate by rounding before calculating.

Examples: 67 rounds to 70, 450 rounds to 500

Measurement & Geometry

Tell time to the minute

Read analog clocks and solve elapsed time problems.

Examples: 3:47, 20 minutes after 2:15 is 2:35

Measure and estimate liquid volume and mass

Use liters, grams, and kilograms appropriately.

Examples: This bottle holds about 2 liters

Understand area as covering

Find area by counting unit squares or multiplying.

Examples: A 3×5 rectangle has area 15 square units

Find perimeter of polygons

Add side lengths to find distance around.

Examples: Perimeter of a 4×6 rectangle is 20 units

Where grade 3 students often struggle

  • Confusing multiplication and addition (3 × 4 vs 3 + 4)
  • Not understanding fractions need EQUAL parts
  • Thinking bigger denominator means bigger fraction (1/8 > 1/4)
  • Memorizing facts without understanding (falls apart under pressure)
  • Confusing area and perimeter

Signs your child is on track

  • Can explain what multiplication means, not just compute it
  • Draws pictures to show fraction concepts
  • Self-corrects by estimating before calculating
  • Uses known facts to figure out unknown ones (7×8 from 7×7+7)
  • Explains their thinking, not just gives answers

Coming in grade 4

Mastering these grade 3 skills prepares your child for:

Multi-digit multiplication (23 × 45)
Long division with remainders
